"Bow ties are cool!" (The Doctor) CelebratingNational Bow Tie Day Auctust 28th Here is a little information on the history of the bow tie: The bow tie shares its origin story with the necktie. Both items originated from the neckwear worn by Croatian mercenaries during the Thirty Years War in the 17th century, which was later adopted by gentlemen and became known as a cravate, or cravat. The cravat could be tied in a variety of intricate ways and dominated mens neckwear for many years. Over time, the bow tie evolved from the cravat. In Victorian England, a dinner jacket with a white bow tie came into fashion for the first time. In the early 1900s, bow ties were often worn by stars, including Charlie Chapman, Fred Astaire, and Marlene Dietrich. During World War II, Winston Churchill was often seen wearing a bow tie. In the postwar years, members of the Rat Pack made the bow tie cool, while Sean Connerys James Bond made it iconic. Today, bow ties are often associated with nerd culture, but they are also worn by certain mens fashion icons. And of course, the bow tie is still considered the best accompaniment to a tuxedo for formal events such as weddings! -backthenhistory.com August 25: Forgive Your Foe Friday (the last Friday in August) National Park Service Day Kiss and Make Up Day National Banana Split Day National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day National Whiskey Sour Day World Daffodil Day (the last Friday in August) August 26: Make Your Own Luck Day Musical Yoga Day National Cherry Popsicle Day National Dog Day National Toilet Paper Day Speak Kind Words Saturday (last Saturday in August) Women's Equality Day August 27: Crab Soup Day International Lottery Day Just Because Day Kiss Me Day Lyndon Baines Johnson Day (in Texas) National Pots de Creme Day Sacrifice Our Wants for Others Needs Sunday (the last Sunday in August) Social Justice Sunday Tarzan Day World Rock Paper Scissors Day August 28: Crackers Over the Keyboard Day International Read Comics in Public Day National Bow Tie Day National Cherry Turnover Day National Power Rangers Day Radio Commercials Day Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day Red Wine Day August 29: Chop Suey Day Individual Rights Day Lemon Juice Day Marine Corps Reserve Birthday More Herbs, Less Salt Day Touch a Heart Tuesday (the last Tuesday in August) Willing to Lend a Hand Tuesday (the last Tuesday in August) August 30: Frankenstein Day International Cabernet Sauvignon Day International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances International Whale Shark Day National Beach Day National Grief Awareness Day National Holistic Pet Day National Toasted Marshmallow Day National Sarcoidosis Awareness Day Slinky Day Tug of War Day (the last Wednesday in August)
