Our longest-resident canine is the lovable 'old man of the neighborhood'. Ten-year-old Mitch is a kind, gentle old soul who is sweet but also stubborn and set in his ways. Mitch loves to just lounge around, bask in the sun, and share company, companionship and nice long naps with his canine friends. He is a low-maintenance dog who isn't a fan of pouring rain and lengthy, tiresome walks. Noooo, that nonsense is for the young pups, Mitch would say. 38

This brave canine survivor was brought to CHHS in November 2019 after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. We immediately made sure Rocky received any and all necessary veterinary care, and we paid for all of his medical bills. After months of rest and rehab in our care he has regained the use of his back legs, and Rocky is now able to romp and run in our acres of outdoor play yards. This six-year-old male Boxer mix loves to play with other dogs and to go on long walks. 39

No two names are more connected with the subject of love than the names Romeo and Juliet. So it was only fitting that when these two strays from Whittier were brought to CHHS just before Christmas last year and we witnessed how much they adored each other, we gave them the names of two of William Shakespeare's most famous literary characters. These two dogs rely upon each other and find comfort and happiness in each other's company. Romeo is a four-year-old male Bluetick Coonhound mix and Juliet is a four-year-old female Redbone Coonhound mix. They are a bonded pair and we have promised them they will be adopted together. 40

Daisy is an absolutely adorable and stunningly gorgeous pup. And we promise she didn't apply any makeup for this photo, that's her naturally beautiful look! Daisy is a ten-month-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix who arrived at CHHS this past summer as one of a litter of unexpected and unwanted puppies. Daisy craves attention and affection and loves everyone she meets. She gets along with submissive dogs and puppies but she definitely likes to be the boss. 41

This beautiful ten-month-old hound mix (emphasis on the "mix") arrived at our no-kill shelter this past May. Rena lacked the crucial socialization skills that young puppies should learn so when she first arrived, this sweet pup was quite a handful. Rena loves every person she meets and she is eager to please, and we feel she would make an excellent candidate for more advanced training. Rena still has plenty of puppy energy and she would be an ideal canine companion for a family with an active lifestyle. 42

In January 2018 a cute kitten named Chester was rescued by CHHS after he was found wandering as a stray in Sylva. Chester, our longest-term feline resident, was somewhat aloof at first and didn't care too much for human companionship, but this four-year-old male Domestic Shorthair mix has softened his persona over time and now is more open to affection and attention. Chester loves other felines and would be best suited with a loving family who already has other kitty cats in the home. 43

Three-year-old Rose is a beautiful, but shy, kitty. Although she will allow a human to pet her soft fur, she's really not very sure what to think of this whole notion of affection. She doesn't have a single bit of aggression in her personality, but Rose will definitely need a human companion who will be patient, kind and gentle. We also believe that Rose would thrive best in a home that already has a well-socialized feline, since we have seen time and time again that shy cats will often come out of their shell faster with the help and guidance from another feline. 44

Nora is a 3 1/2-year-old female black and orange tortoiseshell cat who was just a tiny kitten when we transferred her in from our friends at the Outer Banks SPCA on the eve of landfall of Hurricane Florence in September 2018. Nora was quite introverted in the first few months in our care but she has come a long way, making progress slowly but surely. We feel this tortie would continue to 'come out of her shell' in a quiet and loving home with another feline companion to help her gain more trust and confidence around humans. 45
