Fay L. Gradowski Estate

The antiques and collectibles of the estate of Fay L. Gradowski, of DuBois, PA and formerly of Cadillac, Michigan and Suttons Bay, Michigan will be offered for public auction and available for preview on Saturday August 20 at 10AM till 11AM at 3360 Smithtown Road in Falls Creek, PA.

Mrs. Gradowski was a lifelong collector of antiques with a particular eye for primitive furniture. Her collection was assembled in the 1960?s through the late 1980?s in Michigan and graced her 1860?s centennial family homestead in Cadillac. Fay had many connections in the antiques business and she worked at the Nautic Antique shop in Lake Leelanau, Michigan for many years. Highlights of Fay?s furniture collection include a Shaker drop leaf table, a large red secretary, pine dresser, rope bed, wooden salt box, and a two board wormy walnut table which served as the kitchen table and butcher block on the family farm in Suttons Bay. Fay also collected pewter and metal ware and she was most proud of a James Dixon and Sons of England teapot, Derby silver plated teapot, antique candle mold, two hogscraper candlesticks and a variety of pewter candle sticks. Fay also commissioned two reproduction Windsor chairs including a writing arm Windsor by master traditional craftsman Jim Rantala of Cedar, Michigan (http://www.windsorchairresources.com/c-rantala.html).

Fay L. Gradowski, 78, of DuBois, PA, formerly of Suttons Bay, MI and Cadillac, MI, died peacefully on December 17, 2015 at the DuBois Nursing Home.

Fay was born on January 29, 1937 in Flint, MI, the daughter of Vern and Ardith Larson. On December 16, 1968, she married Virgil F. Gradowski, who preceded her in death on August 23, 1994. Fay and Virgil moved to Leelanau County, Michigan to fulfill a desire for open spaces and a hobby farm. There they raised a family, animals and a bountiful garden. After many years in Leelanau, Fay and Virgil took residence in her family?s centennial Larson farm in Cadillac, Michigan. Fay devoted many years to improving the property and took great pride in keeping the farm in the family.

Fay worked at the Wexford Public Library for many years and enjoyed both patrons and co-workers.

At age 50, Fay took up distance running. She found great joy in this new pursuit. Later in life, she turned to long bike rides and walks with her beloved Golden Retriever, Jefferson. Fay had many interests and talents that included sewing, weaving baskets, constructing Shaker boxes and refinishing and reupholstering furniture. She was particularly fond of her carefully curated collection of primitive antiques and loved to read and follow politics.

Fay relocated to DuBois in 2013 and flourished in her newly adopted home. She patronized local downtown businesses and loved exploring the surrounding area while searching for antique shops. She took great delight in her grandchildren and had frequent adventures with Ethan and Addison. Fay is survived by daughters, Lee Anne (Ron) Lawler of Beulah, MI; Jennifer (Chad) Bufka of Northport, MI; son, Dr. Joel (Cynthia) Gradowski of DuBois; and grandchildren Jonathan Lewandowski of Tamarac, FL; and Ethan and Addison Gradowski of DuBois.

A private graveside service will be held at the Larson Family Cemetery in Cadillac, Michigan. Memorials may be directed to the DuBois Nursing Home, 212 South Eighth Street, DuBois, PA 15801 or to the UPMC Cancer Center Melanoma Program, Attn: Megan Boehm, UPMC Forbes Tower Suite 8084, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
