Listing Information
4-H Poultry Chain Anniversary and Virtual Auction

The Rockbridge 4-H Poultry Chain is celebrating its 75 th Anniversary! This Chain began in
1945 between Virginia Cooperative Extension and Sears Roebuck and Company. It was
generally referred to as the “Sears Pullet Chain” as they provided funding for the purchase of
baby chicks for the 4-H members. Sears also gave prize money to each county in the program.
Although Sears and Roebuck are no longer involved, the Rockbridge County Poultry Chain
remains. Rockbridge is the oldest known continuous Poultry Chain in the Commonwealth of
Virginia; perhaps in the United States!
The Chain provides 4-Hers with baby chicks to raise, and then exhibit later in the year.
Usually, the Poultry Chain Show and Auction occurs during the Rockbridge 4-H Livestock Show
and Sale, which is held at the Rockbridge Regional Fair and Expo. However, this year COVID-
19 changed our agenda, but it did not deter the enthusiasm and love our young exhibitors have
for their birds!
4-H members exhibited their hens for judging, and we are happy to report that all received
blue ribbons! The youth are now excited to offer a certain number of hens to be sold at this
virtual auction. The funds from this sale will help to purchase the chicks for next year. The
remaining hens belong to the participant.
For a little background on this year’s birds; the 4-H participants received Rhode Island Red
pullets in May. This bird is an American breed of chicken commonly raised for their superb egg
production. Just one hen can produce more than 280 large, brown eggs per year! The Rhode
Island Red is a hardy bird, and is one of the best choices for a small flock owner.
To receive these Chain chicks, 4-Hers watched a variety of Zoom training sessions where
adult volunteer leaders taught poultry care and production. Leaders have also been available to
answer any questions the exhibitors may have had throughout the summer.
We appreciate your interest and contributions to these young exhibitors and their poultry
projects. Without the help of buyers, such as you, the Rockbridge 4-H Poultry Chain would not
be as successful as it is!
