Tormey/Darling Estate 1 James & Ann Darling Tormey Col. Tormey was a West Point graduate. After retiring from the Army, Jim and Ann returned to Hampton and reside at Cedar Point. Col. Tormey was the business manager and assistant head master at Hampton Roads Academy. They were involved in many community and civic activities. The Tormey’s were played a very important role in the Hampton History Museum. Ann was the daughter of J.S. Darling II, the granddaughter of Frank W. Darling and the great granddaughter of J.S. Darling the founder of J.S. Darling and Son, the largest oyster firm in America from 1884 to 1975. Ann was very active in her church, St. John’s Episcopal located in downtown Hampton, VA. Ann assisted Meals on Wheels and other charitable organizations. 2 The J.S.Darling story James S. Darling was an entrepreneur from New York who fortuitously arrived in Hampton in 1866 with a schooner carrying a cargo of lumber. Hampton had been virtually destroyed by the Civil War and Darling offered his services and lumber for house building. In such a market success came quite easily to Darling and he soon built his own lumber yard and grist mill. By 1879 he also owned a menhaden fish oil factory. A storm subsequently destroyed his factory and forced him into near-bankruptcy and another field of endeavor: the oyster business. By 1884 Darling was one of the largest oyster merchants in the United States. With 350 acres of oysters under cultivation, Darling was the founder of the wholesale oyster industry in Hampton. In 1887 Darling founded the first electric streetcar railway on the Peninsula, connecting Hampton with Newport News. In addition he owned a hotel at the local resort of Buckroe Beach. Then, in 1898 this successful local entrepreneur retired to his house on Victoria Boulevard, where he died in 1900. Printed from Wikipedia 3 Register to win a 16x20 J.S.
