PERSONAL PROPERTY ESTATE AUCTION Tuesday, February 19, 2013 10:30 a.m. Registration & Preview Begins at 10:00 a.m. 1201 Falcon St. Dearborn, Michigan 48128 THE ESTATE OF VELMA L. BROWNLIE
Bill Brownlie worked his way up in the auto industry, starting first in the 1950's as a stylist for dashboards and car interiors at Briggs Motors, then working as a clay modeler at Ford, and moving on to Chrysler as Manager of the clay modelers. In 1956-1957 he became the Imperial Studio Design Manager. It has been published that "Bill Brownlie ... transformed Chrysler's luxury line like nobody else before."
The Chrysler upper management soon realized that his talents as a forward thinking, contemporary visionary of trends in the auto industry would best be utilized in the muscle car market that was starting to evolve. In the mid-to-late 60's, Brownlie became the Dodge Studio Executive Designer, and he is highly regarded as the man behind the design of the first three generations of Dodge Chargers. He also oversaw all the other Dodge and Plymouth "MoPar" muscle cars.
In addition, he was soon given the position of Head of Advanced Concept Design, where his creative visions of where automotive designs were headed were able to be put into creation via designs for future production. About the same time (early 1970's), he was named Head of International Design when Chrysler joined creative forces with Mitsubishi, where he was responsible for working with Mitsubishi and their designers to come up with a compact car for mass production in the USA.
After leaving Chrysler in the late 1970's he established his own automotive design company and then accepted a position in 1980 with Creative Industries as Vice President of Automotive Design.
