Game 7 Auctions is proud to present a collection of Spalding Sporting Guides from the collection of the late Melvin “Doc” Silva. Doc played football at St. Mary’s College, played minor league baseball throughout the 1920s, and was a sportswriter for over six decades. Doc was known for his authoritative, readable sports columns, and having written before the internet era, much of his fact-checking and statistical references were drawn from the very books we submit for your approval this month.
The Spalding Guides were the pre-eminent source of biographical and statistical sports information for decades. In addition to their meticulous commitment to accuracy, these guides contained studio portraits and hand-drawn images of many of the stars of yesteryear. As with any annual sports publication, the first appearance of a legendary superstar can carry a premium. This collection contains guides featuring the first appearance of Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, and many others who shaped the game in its infancy.
These time capsules are the perfect addition to the collection of anyone who fancies themselves a student of the game or who wants to hold a piece of sports history in their hands. Do not hesitate to ask for further pictures or information, as we love going through these books as much as you will. Along with these amazing publications we have complete Topps baseball sets from 1964, 1965 and 1966. Throw in some graded cards and unopened 1970s packs and you've got yourself a fine auction to end the year. |
