Taylor was the US Olympic Swimming coach at the 1924 Paris Olympics & the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. John T. Taylor’s phenomenal swimming career is apparent by the dozens of swimming medals and trophies presented for bidding. John Taylor coached both Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympian who went on to play Tarzan, and Gertrude Ederle, who impressively swam the English Channel. John was the son of the 1871 World Champion rower James G Taylor of Tyne, England, United Kingdom. John T. Taylor’s daughter, Francis Taylor, a decorated swimmer, married John “Bull” Karcis. John “Bull” Karcis’ football career began at Carnegie Tech in 1927. After college, he played for the J.P. Rooneys. The J.P. Rooneys were a semi-pro football team established by Art Rooney in 1921. He went on to play professionally as a fullback in the NFL for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1932-1935) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) (1936-1938), and he helped the New York Giants win the World Championship in 1938 against the Green Bay Packers. He later played for the Boston Redskins. Karcis then coached the Detroit Lions. After his NFL career, John went on to coach at the high school level in Western Pennsylvania.
