The Estate of Carolyn Lockwood Busch, husband Hans Busch, (b.1914 Aachen, GE, d.1996 Bloomington, IN) son of Dr.Fritz Busch, (b.1890 Siegen, GE, d.1951 London GB) Hans Busch studied opera production after leaving Germany with his family in 1933. He became a U.S. citizen in 1942, serving in army intelligence in Italy and then as U.S. Staff Sergeant with the Allied Military Government assisting in the reconstruction of important cultural edifices such as La Scala in Milan. After the war he was affiliated with the Indiana University Opera as stage director for 32 years, noted for premiering Kurt Weill's "Down In The Valley" 1948 and directing the 1964 New York World's Fair production of Turandot with a 200-member cast from I.U. His father, Dr. Fritz Busch, was one of the most famous and influential opera and symphony conductors in the first half of the 20th c. Chief Conductor of the Stuttgart Opera and General Music Director of the Dresden State Opera 1922-1933. Fritz left Nazi Germany in open opposition to the regime to conduct in Argentina, England and the U.S. In 1934 he became a founder and director of the Glyndebourne Mozart Festivals, East Sussex, England. His production of Verdi's "Otello" stage at the old Metropolitan Opera House, New York City, was the first live telecast of an entire opera in 1948. Many recordings were made with Dr. Busch as conductor. Nancy Smith's downsizing included cherished items from her distinguished family, the Smith's and the Fowler's. Clifford Augustus Smith served in the U.S. Army Infantry and was one of few Americans awarded an Order medal by the Chinese Government for his service while living in China. He served in both world wars and was an avid polo player. The medal is on display at E.D.S. and will be included in a future auction of estate memorabilia. Many of the Chinese and Asian artifacts and objects in this sale were purchased by him during his service in Asia. Robert C. Fowler and his son Albro C. Fowler, lived in New York City in the early 20th century where they were commodities traders and members of the cities society. The Tiffany silver and other objects in this sale belonged to this family.
