Reynolds Auction Company is pleased to announce for public sale the life time collections of Mr. John McGuire and the Rev. Chester Freeman. Both men have attained international reputations in their separate fields. Mr. McGuire is a nationally recognized basket maker, author, and historian of traditional New England basketry. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum as well as many private collectors. He has written several books including Old New England Splint Baskets and How to Make Them, Basketry: The Shaker Tradition which received an art award and Basketry: The Nantucket Tradition and The Complete Nantucket Creel Purse Book: How to Make the Mold and the Purse. His reputation as a teacher has taken him all over the world with classes being held in the most prestigious craft schools/universities in Hawaii, Canada, Ireland, and as far as Australia. He developed basketry programs for Hancock Shaker Village and Old Sturbridge Village as well as serving as a consultant for Cooperstown Farmers Museum. 
 
Rev. Chester Freeman is an author, lecturer and teddy bear artist. His book “Run Away Bear” received a “Legislative Resolution” from the New York State Senate for its contribution to promoting understanding and compassion among children. His book was selected by the Children’s Theatre Department of East Carolina University to be produced as a full-scale production with original musical compositions composed by a faculty member of the Music Department. He was commissioned by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to make a set of bears for their permanent collection as they are the largest children’s museum in the world. Rev. Freeman also licensed two of his designs to be manufactured by Merrythought, LTD of England (Toy maker to the Royal Family) in a limited edition worldwide. He has lectured across the country and Canada about the therapeutic value of teddy bears and was one of the first chaplains to write about the power of the teddy bear in helping others. 
 
These collections will be offered without reserve in 2-3 sessions beginning October 29th at the Reynolds Auction Gallery in Palmyra, New York. 
 
A second session will be on-site November 2nd at their home near Geneva. This will be an opportunity to own many items not previously offered for sale as well as some one- of- a -kind pieces. Collections expand both 18th and 19th centuries. 
 
SELLING: quantity of sterling silver flatware & miscellaneous items to include, Tiffany “Wave Edge” ladle, Reed & Barton service for 8 - Francis I, Modernist service for 12; 19th c Lithograph “Shakers Dancing”, Shaker style boxes (several sizes); BASKETS by John McGuire: Nantucket Shaker, several splint, country style & much more!  G.A.R. drum mounted as a table, New England 18th c tavern tables, large group of country accents, large store tea box, unusual “Cook” drier apparatus, collection of 19th c berry baskets - several unusual examples, 1896 Scottish Ribboned basket, miniature Nantucket basket, Native American pieces, RARE signed Steiff Teddy Bear from Rev.
