In-Vessel Compost Digester
Western Kentucky University is auctioning a custom-built in-vessel digester in used condition. Designed and built by a local machine-and-tool company.
Unit is operational and has been used to compost food waste since its installation in 2018.
3-phase.
Includes Perkins cart-tipper, designed to lift heavy carts up to the opening at the top of the digester and tip them over into the chute. Inside the chute, there is a commercial grinder through which food waste and a carbon source (wood chips, cardboard, sawdust, etc.) passes and enters the vessel. The safety ladder used to monitor the chute is included.
Inside the cylindrical vessel, there are steel paddles mounted on a steel rod; these turn as specified by the controller. Turns, or rotations, can be automated to run on a schedule or set to run manually. Number of rotations and direction (forward or backward) can be programmed.
Capable of monitoring and tracking temperature over time. Paddles and steel rod move the food waste through the vessel; finished compost is pushed out of the end chute.
Capacity is approximately 250 pounds of combined feedstock/day (food waste + carbon source).
Operator manuals are available upon request.
This machine is still in use, but minimally.
Known repairs needed: one of the eight paddles needs to be welded back onto the steel rod. Also, the exhaust fan, which was designed to improve ventilation and prevent the compost from getting too hot, is not operational, but our operations never needed this feature.
The two metal shelters (posts and roofing) over the digester are not included.
