Lifetime Collection from the Estate of Captain Steven Welch of Sault Ste. Marie MI, Former owner of the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours Company. Captain Welch passed in Jan. 2022 before retiring and completing his dream of opening a non-profit, educational maritime museum. Hundreds of items were kept in custom crates and are now being offered to the highest bidder to settle his estate. Captain Welch was very particular about his collection with a heavy emphasis on recovered artifacts from known Great Lakes shipwrecks. Captain Welch purchased many artifacts from a pioneering wreck diver James P. Mularkey (1931-2017), who was very active on the Great Lakes in the 1960s & 70s. Besides a great selection of Ship Bells, Lanterns, China, Lg. Ship Models & Life Rings, there is an extensive Ephemera collection that includes over 1500 Nautical Postcards sold in groups & many Timetables from every major Passenger Steamship line going back into the 19th century. Since Captain Welch was owner and captain of the Original Soo Locks Boat Tour Company, there is the largest collection of Soo Locks Ephemera ever to come to auction. This includes rare 19th century Documents, Photos, Promotional Brochures & more to be sold in groups. Unique to this collection, there is a group of the English Royal Yacht "Britannia" items including an Officer's Uniform & hat. Also, there are documents & china surrounding the Queen's Royal Visit to Canada commemorating the official opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1959. This Nautical Collection is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add rare & hard to find items to your own collection.
NOTE: Captain Welch was very aware of the importance of having items that do not violate the 1988, "National Abandoned Shipwreck Act" or the Michigan statutes that created sanctuaries that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) govern. Because of his desire to create a "Public" Museum, He saved every document that covered his purchases of salvaged ship items and any further correspondence about the items history. We do not have written permission to publish these document. We will however be placing these documents with the items they describe and will be available for visual inspection at the preview time advertised. With these documents, Captain Welch proves that he did not remove any items from protected great lakes marine sanctuary zones and he bought most of his salvaged items from the famous Diver James Mularkey (Died 2017) purchasing almost 20 years ago, way past any statute of limitation stated in the State of Michigan laws.
Auctioneers Note: After 45 years of Auctioning 100s of Antique filled estates, I have never had the opportunity to sell a major nautical collection of this caliber & Provenance. We have taken over 1400 photos & have made detailed listings of the lots including sizes plus we have provided condition reports and the provenance on salvaged objects. When we found duplicate items in the Ephemera material, we only took photos of 1 piece. Keep that in mind when reviewing the Auction pictures and reading the text listings. We also found many of the large metal objects had custom wood shipping crates. While most of those can be reused for future shipping, some will need repairs from their original shipping use. This Auction is being hosted by Braun & Helmer Auction service at their Auction Gallery in Tipton Michigan (Irish Hills Area). All financial transactions including any Online billing & shipping will be handled by them. .
Bidding will be both Live and Online, so make your plans & mark your calendar!
