History of Memorial Day Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date General Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. - History.com Friday, May 27 National Sunscreen Day National Heat Awareness Day National Road Trip Day National Cellophane Tape Day National Hairstylist Mental Health Awareness Day National Don't Fry Day National Grape Popsicle Day Saturday, May 28 National Burger Day National Brisket Day World Blood Cancer Day Sunday, May 29 Learn About Composting Day International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers National Biscuit Day Indianapolis 500 National Coq Au Vin Day National Paperclip Day Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day Monday, May 30 Memorial Day National Creativity Day World Multiple Sclerosis Day World Otter Day National Mint Julep Day National Water a Flower Day National Hole in My Bucket Day Loomis Day Tuesday, May 31 World No Tobacco Day National Smile Day Autonomous Vehicle Day National Macaroon Day National Save Your Hearing Day Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day National Speak in Complete Sentences Day CORINNE SULLIVAN
