Bayonets & Scabbards from the One-of-a-Kind Collection of the Late Joseph R. “Dick” Marsden & Guns from the Collections of the Late Henry “Hank” Daidone & Ed Kemp

Joseph R. “Dick” Marsden: Dick was a graduate of St. John’s College Military School and Columbia Technical Institute, both in Washington, D.C. He was employed with the Washington Gas Light Company for 35 years, retiring in 1983 as Assistant Chief of Drafting and Design in the Engineering Department. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church congregations in both Hanover, PA and Emmitsburg, MD. He was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard, serving in the 300th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion during the Korean War and earning the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. He was a member of the American Legion Posts in Hanover, PA and in Emmitsburg, MD. He had a life-long interest in American military history, and was a “Fellow” of the Company of Military Historians. He was a member of the Society of American Bayonet Collectors, and served as the organization’s first president. He was a charter member of the Potomac Arms Collectors’ Association, and belonged to the Forks of the Delaware Historical Arms Society, Inc., the North-South Skirmish Association, the Sons of Union Veterans, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the National Rifle Association, and the Hanover Historical Society. Dick and his wife Catherine participated in the ceremonies of the Civil War Centennial (1961-1965) and the Nation’s Bicentennial (1976-1981.) He served as president of the Emmitsburg Historical Society for 10 years. He and his wife also restored two historic homes in Emmitsburg, the Vincent Sebold House at 137 South Seton Ave., and the Hubert Joy House at 203 South Seton Ave. He also worked on the committee to have Emmitsburg placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Henry “Hank” Daidone: Hank served in the Marine Corps before attending the Naval Academy. His dream was to become a Marine Corps Officer upon graduation from the the Naval Academy. Upon graduation with the Class of 1959, Hank was unable to become accepted back into the Marine Corps and thus he entered the Navy as an Ensign. He served on the USS New and the USS Northampton including support of the Bay of Pigs, Cuba Invasion. After a tour as a CIC School Instructor at NATTC, Brunswick, GA, he reported to FTG, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While in Guantanamo he contracted a severe case of blood fungus disease which left him not physically qualified for Sea Duty. He was then assigned to FAAWTC, Dam Neck, VA in the FACDEN Program. He left the Navy in June 1969. After entering the civilian workforce, his jobs as an Engineer for the Department of Defense continued to support Navy Programs: NTDC Combat System Testing, the Saudi Naval Expansion Program, construction of the Naval Facility in Jobail Saudi Arabia and the Joint US and USSR Konus Program. He and his wife Nettie ultimately moved to Shiloh, North Carolina where he taught math at the College of Albemarle and conducted GED training for the North Carolina Prison System. Hank was active in many areas outside of his vocations. He became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Maryland Defense Force and was a member of several Fire and Rescue Companies. He was chosen as one of the Outstanding Young Men in America in 1968. He was the President of the Potomac Arms Collectors Association, a member of the Maryland Arms Collector’s Association and the Rifle and Pistol Association. He was a Civil War history buff, an avid gun collector of Whitney pistols and long rifles, collected many Civil War artifacts and weapons, as well as publishing many articles on antique firearms. He was very active in the Holy Family Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ed Kemp: Ed earned a bachelor's degree in business and marketing from the University of Maryland and professionally he enjoyed a successful career in the oil industry for several decades with Esso, Humble Oil, Exxon, and Delmarva Oil. Ed's lifelong passion was for history, particularly American military antiques and Maryland memorabilia. He was a Life Member of Maryland Arms Collectors Association, participating in 50 consecutive shows and in 2014 was awarded "Best in Show" for his display. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Company of Military Historians. He had an intense regard and respect for the men and women that served our Nation, particularly our WWII POW's and those that were in the Death March of Bataan. He and Elsie authored 40+ stories of these prisoners of war which he personally interviewed. These previously untold stories were illuminated by his writing and research and will be archived at the Maryland Historical Society
