HONORABLE MENTION

Circa 1856 hand-written letter by The Father of Baseball, Alexander J. Cartright.
Alexander Joy Cartwright (April 17, 1820 - July 12, 1892) was a New York bookseller and founder of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club who is considered the "official" inventor of the modern game of baseball. In 1845, Cartwright and a committee from his club created a set of rules in use by the Knickerbockers and based on an English game called "rounders." The original 14 rules were somewhat similar to -- but not identical to -- the English sport. Among Cartwright’s ideas was a diamond-shaped playing field, foul territory, three strikes per batter, and a uniform distance between bases. The US Congress formally declared the "father of baseball" in 1953. Cartwright was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938.
