From a local Monmouth Beach Estate comes a beautiful and one of a kind Paul Evans Sculptural front floating sideboard. This one of a kind piece was made by Paul Evans in 1974 in his studio in New Hope, PA. Paul was an American born furniture designer, sculptor, and artist, who is famous for his contributions to American furniture design and the American craft Movement of the 1970s. His creation of metal sculpted furniture set him apart. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and later settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and shared a showroom with woodworker Phillip Lloyd Powell. He studied at several institutions including the Philadelphia Textile Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen, Rochester, New York, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In the 1950s he began making copper chests and followed with sculpted steel-front cabinets. Evans had a two-man show in 1961 at America House, an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York (now named the Museum of Arts & Design). In 1964, Evans became a featured designer for furniture manufacturer Directional Furniture. With Directional Furniture, Paul Evans introduced several series of furniture lines; such as Argente series, Sculpted Bronze series, Sculptured and Painted Steel, Patchwork Copper, Pewter and Brass, and the popular Cityscape series. Evans pieces were frequently signed, and some of the custom items have a signature and a date. Paul Evans' combination of handcraft and technology anticipated the limited-edition art furniture of today. The artist's relationship with Directional Furniture set a unique standard for creative manufacture by insisting every piece is made by hand, finished by hand, supervised by the artist at each step of production, one piece at a time. Sadly, he passed in 1987. This piece has a sculpted and painted steel front with patchwork copper on the top and sides. It is covered by a single piece of black slate that sits at the top. The sculpted front has different designs running throughout that make this piece completely different to the others that Evans made. Each one may look similar, but each is one of a kind. Has a welded signature on the base of the right most side door and is dated 1974. It comes from a local Monmouth Beach estate and was purchased from the Paul Evans Studio in New Hope, PA in 1974. It has been in the family ever since. Bodnar’s Auction Sales is proud and excited to bring this piece to the market for sale on March 28, 2019 at the NJ Convention and Expo Center at 97 Sunfield Ave, Edison, NJ. Bidding will be offered in-house, through phone and absentee bidding, as well as online through Invaluable and Auction Zip. This very rare piece has a pre-auction estimate of $80,000.00- $120,000.00 with a starting price of $40,000.00 and must be sold to the highest bidder to settle an estate. Similar pieces have sold for six figures and can retail in a gallery for close to ½ a million dollars! We will see what it brings on sale day!
