From the Allan and Eileen Heaslip Estate and Others
 

William John Heaslip was born in Toronto, Canada, May 16, 1898. He exhibited an interest in art at an early age and was apprenticed to a lithographer. Heaslip's other interest was aviation, and when he was old enough, he joined the Royal Flying Corps, serving during World War I.

Following the war, Heaslip came to New York City and began formal art studies at the Art Students League. He continued his studies at the school of the National Academy of Design where he won the Suydam Medal.

With his art studies complete, Heaslip combined his two loves, painting and aviation and began doing illustration for numerous newspapers and magazines including Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Boy's Life, American Boy/Youth's Companion, doing almost always aviation subjects.

It was also during this time in the 1930s that Heaslip began exhibiting his work. In 1937, he exhibited at the First International Aeronautical Art Exhibit in Los Angeles and was awarded a prize for his entry.

During World War II, Heaslip was kept busy doing war scene illustrations for the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Wide World Syndicate and The Associated Press.

His work may be found among the collections of the Pentagon, The War College in Washington, DC, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, The Heinz Company in Pittsburgh, and many private collections. One of his prints was selected in 1936 to be part of that year's "Fine Prints of the Year."

Heaslip in addition to being a painter and illustrator, is also known as an etcher and lithographer and his prints are also widely held.

Following his retirement, Heaslip moved to the Hackettstown, New Jersey area and in rural New Jersey, he took up the painting of watercolor and oil farm scenes. He died at Morristown, New Jersey Hospital in 1970.
